The Farm

OUR STORY

Our story

Our family passion and motivation lie in community service and early education. The Farm was designed by our family to create a community space supporting this vision.

We started our careers in education living in Davenport. Gus taught at Bonny Doon Elementary and Sara taught at Pacific School. Together we designed curriculum and discussed best teaching practices. Both small schools gave us so much experience with child centered education, life lab, food lab, and family/community relations. After the birth of our daughter, Claire, we knew we wanted to begin providing her with the quality care and early childhood education experience that we’d envisioned. In 2013 we began our journey in creating preschool programs in Santa Cruz County. You can learn about our school sites at www.discoverypreschoolandfamilycenter.com

THE FARM

In Early Childhood Education, philosophers and scholars of the field describe the environment as one of our children’s greatest teachers. Our home based program is a beautiful space with 18 different fruit trees, chickens, raised garden beds and gorgeous oak trees. The half day program is a mixed age classroom with a Reggio Emilia inspired approach to curriculum design. The space in which our children play is rich with nooks and crannies, books, light and shadow, paint, magic, critters and gardens, clay and feathers. There are things to explore, touch, experience. Things to care for, to be curious about. There are things to touch, to smell, to get lost in the magic of. The environment at The Farm provides an aesthetically beautiful and calm space for children to be free and secure while exploring their natural curiosities.
